Former Topper Mee to coach Bandits squad at Diddle Arena


The Bowling Green Bandits were formally introduced Friday, outlining details for the semi-pro basketball franchise that will begin play in the American Basketball Association in November.

The Bandits have secured E.A. Diddle Arena as their home venue, with 15 home dates – mostly on Sundays – beginning Nov. 9 against the Memphis Lions and running through March 8.

With the ties to Western Kentucky as its home venue, the Bandits will have a bit of Hilltopper flavor behind the scenes and on the sidelines.

Former WKU great Jim McDaniels will serve as a representative partner, while Darnell Mee – who played at WKU from 1990-93 – will be the head coach.

“It’s different to be on the other side of the line,” Mee said.

“You have to make things happen a different way on the coaching side. It will be exciting, but will be a different kind of exciting.”

Mee said having home games in Diddle Arena was a selling point when he was offered the job.

“It’s great, knowing I have so many great memories in Diddle,” Mee said. “Being able to coach there is a great thing.”

Mee will be assisted by Kenney Britt, who played for Warren East in the mid-1970s.

Tryouts for the Bandits will take place Sept. 21.

And while CEO Matt Morris and president and COO Bryan Loder promised fast-pace excitement for basketball fans, they also emphasized the importance of community involvement.

The Bandits have already donated backpacks through community outreach programs.

The franchise has also hosted a blood drive with the American Red Cross and plans to do more things like that in the future, hoping it can create a fan base and excitement for the franchise.

Ticket prices will range from $5-15 dollars, with season tickets available at around $150

ABASPBL ANNOUNCES DRAFT FOR SUMMER LEAGUE

Los Angeles, CA.  The 2014 ABA Summer Pro Basketball League Draft is getting ready to start in Los Angeles CA, Detroit MI, Chicago IL, Washington DC, Jackson MS, Baltimore MD, Memphis TN, Fayetteville NC, Charleston SC and Houston TX.
The New England Region of the ABA Summer :Pro Basketball League completed their draft on June 6th with 36 players being drafted.  10 other ABASPBL cities will begin conducting their draft during the next two weeks.  There is still time for players top enter the draft.  Time is of the essence, so it is extremely important that you visit the official ABASPBL website at http://ABASPBL.COM for complete information on how you
can enter the draft.
In addition to entering the ABASPBL draft, players will be placed on an ABA Summer Pro Basketball League team.  They will play 8 scheduled games plus playoffs.  Teams must qualify for the playoffs.  Players will compete against the highest level of competition and earn pro status.  Game film will be available.
The ABASPBL provides basketball players with maximum exposure. Pro coaches, pro team owners,  pro agents, pro international teams and NBA scouts will be in attendance at the games or will utilize the official ABASPBL website in their recruiting efforts.

ABA CEO JOE NEWMAN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Indianapolis, IN.  The American Basketball Association (ABA) www.abalive.com today announced that Joe Newman, ABA CEO, will retired effective July 1st. Ron Tilley, the current ABA President, will assume the role as ABA CEO.
Joe made the announcement himself at the ABA League Meeting in Las Vegas on May 31st before a packed room of ABA team owners, coaches, and guests.  “I’m 77 years old and the timing is right,” stated Newman.  “We recently opened large offices in Phoenix, AZ, staffed it with some very capable, competent and experience people, and are ready to take the ABA to the next level.  In Ron Tilley, we have a man of great integrity, an excellent vision of the future, a strong business background and many years as a professional coach and player – all solid credentials to make the ABA even bigger, better and bolder than it is.”
The ABA anticipates beginning next season with nearly 100 teams, making it the largest professional sports league in the US and it is already the most diversified in history with nearly 75% of its teams owned by
African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and women.  It has recently added a Native American team and announced that 40 of its regular season games plus the playoffs would be carried on ESPN3 (www.WatchESPN.com).
Newman added, “Good CEO’s always must keep in mind that they have a responsibility to make sure that there are good men and women who can succeed them and improve on what they have done. I know that I have done that with Ron Tilley. Ron is not me; he will not duplicate all of the things I have done.  He will not operate necessarily as I have. But he will put his own stamp on things and he will do those things necessary to improve on the foundation that I have laid down over these past years. Uppermost of those is making sure that the ABA is a league of opportunity and inclusion, that the ABA always treats everyone with dignity and respect and that the ABA always has a goal of impacting its communities positively and improving the quality of life of all who come into contact with the league.”

ABA TO BE ON ESPN NEXT SEASON
